The correlation between tea and buddhism has been prevalent in our culture for some time now. Tea in this context, has always been synonymous with calm, cleansing properties and the same can’t be said for other beverages like coffee or soda. Buddhism was the driving force for the production of tea, before sugar was introduced. Which saw the introduction of more quality teas like greens and oolongs.

The Traditions Of Quality Tea & Buddhism

Tea during these times shaped many of the traditions and customs that many Buddhists abide by. It was part of the daily routine during the reign of the Tang Dynasty which was about 1200 years ago. Many of these temples and monasteries positioned themselves as contributors to the creation and distribution of quality tea.

As they grew, so too was the popularity of tea. Wandering monks would disperse their tea growth to areas in Japan, developing alternative methods to make the tea such as pan-frying, bamboo tree-shading, and much more. Buddhists were responsible for domesticating the wild tea tree. What once could grow up to 20 feet was significantly reduced to a 1-meter shrub. These days, many of the central tea regions have retained the fundamental qualities of Buddhism.

What makes tea even more compelling is its appeal as a safe and soothing drink. When it became more commonplace in Buddhist culture, it incited the introduction of tea ceremonies that focus on respect, purity, harmony, and peace. Tea was one of the first alternatives to alcohol, and it required much less labor to fuel its production. When tea started to make waves in East Asia, its expansion during this time was looked at as a social movement and had a significant impact on the capabilities of the military. This spurred tea competitions, and the rituals affiliated with tea became more and more rigorous.
