About Us

Tea `n Things, Inc. started when Penny and Roger Bowman took over what once was the old Amanzi Tea shop.

Originally, Amanzi operated “hot spots for tea” in downtown Simpsonville, as well as their flagship shop at the Haywood Mall. Unfortunately, the mall store is no longer open, but thankfully the Simpsonville location is now reopened with Penny and Roger  taking the helm.

Tea ‘n Things offers something for everyone. We sell 90 different all natural loose teas, (Green tea, Black tea, Rooibos tea,Oolong tea, White tea, Yerba Mate, Herbal teas, and our newest addition, “Medicinal Tea.”)

Our shop also has a popular “tea bar” serving a wide variety of tea-based drinks, including delicious bubble tea, frappes and lattes. We also have made-to-order coffees, cappuccino, and espresso.

What Makes Tea ‘n Things Different from Grocery Store Tea?

What makes our tea different from what you’d find at the grocery stores or the mall is it’s high quality blending. The tea is carefully grown, handpicked, and blended using natural ingredients from Europe. This superior, state-of-the-art blending that makes all the difference. Our blenders have both the chemistry and technological expertise required to blend outstanding tea.

The quality of tea is determined by the number of stems, leaves, dust, and fannings in the tea, Ideally, you want more leaves, and less dust and stems. Fannings are broken pieces of tea leaves that have a coarse texture. They are the grade of tea used in most commercial tea bags.

Specialty Drinks: Bubble Tea, Frappes & Lattes

Tea ‘n Things offers a wide variety of tea-based drinks. Sophisticated tea drinkers wanting something different and delicious may enjoy the Matcha green tea, or one of many freshly made chai drinks, such as Pumpkin Spice Chai or Chocolate Chai. Our Frappe is iced and perfect for quenching your thirst on a warm day. Latte are served hot, with frothy steamed milk. Lattes are the perfect comfort beverage.

At the tea bar, we also offer all of our 90 blends either hot or over ice. The “barista” carefully times how long they steep their loose tea beverage, so that each cup comes out perfect. Steeping time varies, depending on the tea. If a tea steeps too long, it becomes bitter. If the steep time is too short, then the tea is weak and doesn’t release the antioxidants.

We are known for our “Bubble Tea.” It is the best in Greenville. We use most of the old Amanzi recipes. In case you don’t know, Bubble Tea is a cold, frothy drink made with tea, milk and various flavorings. The fun of bubble tea comes from the small, roasted and chewy tapioca balls, also known as the “pearls.”  Bubble tea was originally invented in the 1980’s in tea shops of Taiwan. Bubble teas come in flavors such as Orange Creamsicle, Red Thai, Cotton Candy, Coconut, Taro, Peaches and Cream, just to name a few.

What Happened to the Old Amanzi Tea Shop?

The original owners sold the name “Amanzi Tea” to the Amanzi shop in London. Our new name is  Tea ‘n Things. The British Amanzi shop didn’t want to continue the operations here in America. So, we first sought out and bought the same teas (plus others) from the original Amanzi supplier.  Once we had the tea source, we decided to open our own tea shop, and the Simpsonville store finally became available. We know how popular the teas are in the Greenville area and anywhere they are served.

Roger and Penny Bowman used to buy tea from Amanzi as a retailer, on a wholesale level: “For five years, we sold Amanzi tea in Southern California. In fact, we were Amanzi’s largest customer. We know the teas!” says Roger

“We started this tea business is because we have access to the best tea we’ve ever had. Our customers absolutely love this tea. We relocated from California to Simpsonville, just to be involved with Amanzi and open what now has become, Tea ‘n Things,” explains Roger.

“Actually, we came out of retirement to sell this tea. If it wasn’t a great product, we wouldn’t have done that.”

Tea ‘n Things is a family-friendly, hospitable place where people can enjoy a tea or coffee beverage of their choice at a decent price or select a tea to make at home. If all goes well, we’d like to open more locations. No matter where we might go, we will serve the best tea and coffee in town.
